Teatro Amazonas de Manaus serves as headquarters for this company founded in 1998 by the culture department of the state of Amazonas. In order to keep a varied repertory with a contemporary approach, Cia. de Dança do Amazonas works with invited choreographers. From 2003 to 2005 it was directed by Ivonice Satie (1950-2008), from São Paulo, who created the choreography Grito Verde. The company is presently under the direction of Getúlio Rocha and Monique Andrade.

Founded in 1988 by Walson Botelho and Ninho Reis, this is the only professional folkloric dance company in Brazil. Under the artistic direction of José Carlos Santos (Zebrinha) since 1993, its 38 members, among dancers, musicians and singers, are constantly trained in dance, music and theatre techniques. Their purpose is to develop a performing language having as a basis the popular expression of the culture from Bahia, always in tune with their roots and contemporary issues. Since 1992 the company maintains an active schedule of performances abroad.

Founded in April 1981, it became the first official company in North-Northeast regions in Brazil. The ballet is supported by Fundação Cultural do Estado da Bahia, which is linked to Secretaria de Cultura e Turismo. Even having as a basis a classical technique, the company dancers cultivate a contemporary repertory in tune with cultural and racial heritages in Bahia. Different choreographers have created dances for this company, wich is presently directed by a commission, with artistic assistance from the theatre director Nehle Franke.

Founded in 1998 by the choreographer Cristina Castro. Besides its technical and aesthetic diversity, Viladança’s work involve social actions such as projects with communities and public and private schools in order to form new audiences. Among other works, the company’s repertory includes Aroeira – Com Quantos Nós se Faz uma Árvore (2006) and Da Ponta da Língua à Ponta do Pé (2004), the latter about dance history, performed in a language fun and easy to understand to both adults and children.

Directed by the choreographer Luciana Lara and the producer and set designer Marconi Valadares, this company has been active for 21 years. Its repertory amount to nine works, among which Efeitos (1991), Dali (2000), Cidade em Plano (2006) and Autorretrato Dinâmico (2009). Besides its researches in contemporary dance, the company undertakes training projects in performance and art-education. Recently it started to explore urban interventions, installations and videodance.

Founded in 1997, the company’s focus is to serve as a center of propagation and experiments for contemporary dance. Under the artistic direction of Giselle Rodrigues, BaSiraH is formed by 10 dancers and created a total of 11 works. It won the award Klauss Vianna in 2005, 2007 and 2008. Presently the group directs the Espaço BaSiraH, where it offers training, workshops and other activities.

The company was founded in 1989 as a result of a research and training project started in 1986 in Brasília by the teacher, researcher and choreographer Lenora Lobo. Since company’s foundation Lenora has been centered on working with performers of different backgrounds (such as dance, theatre, visual arts, body therapies) with the purpose of enhancing their qualities for drama and creativity, so that they be able to act as creators. The production of dance-theatre pieces consistent with the Brazilian culture is the main focus of company’s work.
